The growing realm of online reviews may feel foreign and frustrating at times. Being proactive is key to your success in handling online reviews about your business. We have fifteen tips to help you turn those reviews into tools to improve your search engine ranking and gain new customers. So, let’s go back to the basics to build a solid foundation for the reputation of your business through this platform.

WHAT IS MY ONLINE REPUTATION? The bottom line is your company’s reputation depends on a collection of elements. It includes: online reviews, stellar and trustworthy content, testimonials, social proof, and more.
Your online reputation has the potential to set you apart from your competition. Your customers submit business reviews throughout the Internet and on your social media pages. They can have a powerful and positive impact with your marketing strategy.
WHAT ARE ONLINE REVIEWS ANYWAY? Simply put, online reviews are feedback from your customers on websites (i.e. Google) and social media platforms (i.e. Facebook). The customer reviews are seen on your business profile and often are accompanied with a rating of some sort.

WHY DO ONLINE REVIEWS MATTER? There are a couple reasons why the reviews should matter to you. First of all, you can use the feedback to make improvements with your business (ranging from quality of product to customer service). Secondly, the online reviews can be leveraged for marketing. The old adage, “Word of mouth can make you or break you” holds true with online customer reviews. So make sure to leverage the positive reviews to your advantage for marketing purposes!
WHAT ARE THE MOST INFLUENTIAL ONLINE REVIEW WEBSITES? The answer to this question really depends on what kind of business you own. The following sites would be most beneficial for service-oriented businesses.

•Lawyers: Avvo
•Contractors: Kudzu, Home Advisor, and Angie’s List
•Medical: RateMDs and Healthgrades
•Travel and Hospitality: TripAdvisor
•Restaurants and Retail: Yelp
•Restaurants: OpenTable
The following sites are important for almost any small business owner:
•Bing Places
•Yellow Pages
•Better Business Bureau

IT’S ALL ABOUT GOOGLE: Stop everything! Before you go on, make sure you’ve claimed your spot on Google My Business profile. Once you’ve done that, customers are free to leave reviews for you. When a review has been submitted, you’ll be sent a notification. You can respond to each review as they come in. The reviews and star ratings will show up on Google Maps and on search pages results.
YELP REVIEWS FOR SMALL BUSINESSES: Beware of frustration with Yelp! It’s important to play by Yelp’s rules (they have complicated algorithms to run their site and filters in place for rule breakers). So, don’t purchase reviews and do not solicit reviews directly from your place of work. Yelp will frown on this behavior.

WHAT ABOUT SEO? Reviews do increase clicks to your website and interaction with your business from search results. This increased interaction will also have positive effects on your search engine optimization. It’s a win-win situation!

WHAT ABOUT FACEBOOK? Once your Facebook business page is categorized as a local business and lists a physical address, reviews are automatically enabled for your page. It’s important to track all of your reviews on FB just as you would with any other site. If you choose to disable reviews from your FB business page, you will lose the benefit of having positive customer reviews, which increases your search ranking.
We hope the information given in this first part of learning about online reviews is helpful for you as you continue to navigate the ins and outs of the web and how to best leverage your business. Stay tuned for part two with even more tips to ensure the best use of online reviews for your business!
